A quiet Monday evening drive through Lane County turned into an absolute nightmare on Highway 58. Just after 5 p.m., eighteen-year-old Leilani Kana’i Barto was driving eastbound in her gray Mazda 3 sedan near Rattlesnake Road. She pulled out to pass the cars in front of her, likely just trying to get where she was going on a routine summer afternoon. But within a fraction of a second, that single maneuver set off a devastating chain reaction that changed multiple lives forever.
Leilani, a resident of Dallas, Oregon, was still at the very beginning of her adult life. Friends and local community members in Lane County are now left picking up the pieces after learning that the bright young woman died right there at the scene. Emergency crews rushed to the stretch of road near Rattlesnake Road, but there was simply nothing they could do to save her after the violence of the impact.
According to preliminary findings from the Oregon State Police, Leilani crossed into the oncoming westbound lane while trying to overtake traffic. Right in her path was a silver Toyota Highlander SUV heading west. The front ends of both vehicles collided with sudden, unforgiving force, leaving both drivers with virtually no time to steer clear or brake.
The initial head-on impact was only the first part of this terrible sequence. Right behind the Toyota Highlander was a heavy Kenworth semi-truck pulling a full trailer. The truck driver couldn’t avoid the wreckage unfolding directly ahead, slamming into the Toyota shortly after the first collision. The sheer mass of the three vehicles involved turned the two-lane highway into a chaotic crash site.
While Leilani tragically lost her life in the crash, seventy-four-year-old Arthur Allen Corliss of Eugene, who was driving the Toyota Highlander, suffered severe injuries. Medics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors continue to treat his condition. Meanwhile, thirty-eight-year-old Anthony Richard Luna of Sutherlin, the driver behind the wheel of the semi-truck, managed to walk away from the massive pileup without any physical injuries.
State troopers had to shut down and restrict traffic on Highway 58 for nearly four hours. Responders from Pleasant Hill Goshen Fire & Rescue, the Eugene Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation worked tirelessly alongside troopers to secure the scene, clear the heavy debris, and figure out how everything went so wrong. Investigators noted that excessive speed appears to have played a key role in causing the fatal crash.
As the official investigation moves forward, the entire Lane County community is wrapped in deep grief over the loss of Leilani Barto. A split-second choice on a familiar stretch of highway ended a young life far too soon, leaving a family heartbroken and reminding everyone just how quickly everything can change on the open road.
