Austin Leigh Lippincott was just twenty-nine years old, riding his Kawasaki motorcycle down Route 207 on a clear Tuesday afternoon. He was a local guy from Uncasville, a quiet town in southeastern Connecticut. To most folks around New London County, a ride along the rural state highway is just a routine part of the day. But around three-forty-five that afternoon, a single split-second moment changed everything for Austin and everyone who knew him.
It was a bright day as Austin coasted down the two-lane stretch near Pautipaug Hill Road in Franklin. He was heading westbound, slowing down to make a left-hand turn. The road ahead looked completely clear, and there was no warning that anything was about to go wrong.
Out of nowhere, an oncoming Chevrolet work van traveling eastbound moved across the center line. The van driver was attempting a right turn, but the vehicle drifted directly into Austin’s westbound lane. In a matter of seconds, the motorcycle’s path was blocked, leaving the young rider with no space or time to avoid a collision.
The impact was sudden and violent. The crash threw Austin off his Kawasaki and launched him onto the hard asphalt of Route 207. He lay in the roadway suffering from devastating, life-threatening injuries while bystanders and passing drivers called nine-one-one.
State troopers and emergency medical crews rushed to the intersection within minutes. First responders worked quickly on the scene to stabilize Austin before loading him into an ambulance. They sped down the road to Backus Hospital in Norwich, where doctors did everything they could to save him.
Despite the tireless efforts of the medical staff at Backus Hospital, the injuries proved too severe. Late Tuesday night, Austin passed away. News of his death quickly reached Uncasville and the surrounding towns, leaving family, friends, and neighbors in deep shock and grief over a life cut far too short.
Route 207 serves as a key lifeline connecting communities like Norwich and Lebanon, a road traveled daily by hundreds of local drivers.
