It was a quiet late night along U.S. Route 33 in Pickerington, Ohio, when everything went wrong in an instant. Early Saturday morning around 12:45 a.m., 28-year-old Bailey Johnston was out driving her 2016 Hyundai Sonata through central Ohio.
For reasons investigators still cannot explain, Johnston ended up heading the wrong direction on the divided highway. She was driving westbound, but she was traveling inside the eastbound lanes near mile marker 5, right by Lockville Road.
Driving the wrong way on a dark highway is every motorist’s worst fear. Cars traveling in the correct direction have almost zero time to react when headlights suddenly appear directly in front of them out of the darkness.
That terrifying reality unfolded when Johnston’s sedan crashed head-on into an oncoming 2022 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. The 21-year-old man behind the wheel of the truck had no room to avoid the collision.
The impact was severe and immediate. Emergency crews rushed to the scene in Fairfield County, southeast of Columbus, where they found scattered vehicle parts and heavy wreckage blocking the road.
Tragically, Johnston suffered fatal injuries in the wreck and was pronounced dead right at the scene. The 21-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Colorado survived, but he suffered serious injuries. First responders quickly transported him to Grant Medical Center in Columbus for emergency treatment.
Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lancaster Post spent hours documenting evidence under police lights. They were joined by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Bloom Township Fire Department. Authorities have not released the surviving driver’s name, and they are still investigating what led Johnston to enter the wrong side of the highway.
