Illinois State Police detectives are piecing together a horrifying chain of events following a deadly Friday evening wreck on the Dan Ryan Expressway. What initially looked like a catastrophic traffic mistake is now being treated as a calculated, violent crime on one of Chicago’s busiest highways.
Just before 6:00 p.m., a driver pulled onto the northbound express lanes of Interstate 94 near 31st Street. But instead of merging with the traffic flow, the driver intentionally flipped direction, pressing the gas and heading straight southbound into oncoming rush-hour traffic.
For several terrifying miles, oncoming drivers slammed on their brakes and swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle. The driver showed no signs of stopping or pulling over, speeding directly toward head-on collisions as commuting families scrambled out of the way.
The reckless joyride ended in utter catastrophe near Garfield Boulevard. The vehicle smashed directly into multiple oncoming cars, triggering a devastating five-vehicle pileup that completely wrecked several automobiles and blocked the entire highway.
When emergency crews arrived, they found a scene of total chaos. Vee Swanigan, a passenger inside the suspect’s vehicle, had died on impact. Investigators quickly learned that just moments before the crash, she had phoned a loved one to report that the driver was purposefully trying to crash the car and end her life.
The suspected driver survived the brutal impact with minor injuries and was promptly arrested at the scene. Detectives say the crash stems from an ongoing domestic violence dispute that escalated into deadly violence on the open road. Serious criminal charges are currently pending as state police gather physical evidence and witness accounts.
The severity of the investigation forced state troopers to shut down all northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway for hours. Traffic backed up across Chicago’s South Side late into the night while crash reconstruction teams processed the scene. Investigators are asking anyone who saw the vehicle driving the wrong way to come forward immediately.
