Wednesday night was supposed to be just another summer ride through Schuylkill County for five young friends. Instead, it ended in absolute heartbreak on a dark stretch of pavement just north of New Philadelphia.
Alexandria Womer, an 18-year-old from Pottsville, was riding shotgun in a Chevy Malibu shortly after 8:00 p.m. She had her whole life ahead of her, full of plans, laughs, and future memories. But in a split second, everything changed on Burma Road near Firetower Road.
The car, driven by a 19-year-old friend, rolled into a sharp left-hand curve and lost traction. It skidded across the yellow center line, right into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer. The heavy rig couldn’t stop in time, hitting the sedan head-on with catastrophic force.
When local emergency crews rushed to the scene, they found widespread destruction. Alexandria suffered devastating injuries from the direct impact on the passenger side. Authorities had no choice but to pronounce the young woman dead right there at the crash site.
Four other young people were packed inside that car, and three of them were rushed away with serious injuries. A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, both from Pottsville, along with the driver, sustained heavy trauma. A 14-year-old boy from Port Carbon managed to pull through with minor physical injuries.
Across Pottsville, news of Alexandria’s sudden death hit like a freight train. Friends, former classmates, and neighbors have spent the hours since leaning on each other, sharing stories, and trying to make sense of losing someone so young.
Pennsylvania State Police troopers out of Frackville are still piecing together how the driver lost control. They are reviewing road conditions, speed, and mechanical factors, while a grief-stricken town holds its breath for the surviving teens.
