A sun-soaked Saturday afternoon on the Fox River turned into an unthinkable tragedy when Magdalena Jabłońska had her life abruptly taken away. The 48-year-old Des Plaines resident was simply enjoying a peaceful weekend boat ride near McHenry when a speeding vessel came out of nowhere, leaving a family shattered and a community in deep mourning.
Magdalena wasn’t just anybody to the people who knew her—she was the kind of person who instantly lit up every room she walked into. Friends, neighbors, and family members always talked about her infectious smile and huge heart, naturally describing her as the genuine sunshine in everyone’s life.
Her deep devotion to helping others was baked right into her DNA. Serving her country in the United States Marine Corps came as a completely natural path for her, as she was always the first person to step up, protect, and lend a hand to anyone in need without expecting a single thing in return.
Beyond her military service and love for her family, Magdalena had an enormous passion for animal welfare, especially rescue dogs. Instead of just gathering funds for standard arrangements, the family chose to route donations straight to local dog shelters, bringing her life’s true passion full circle and drawing over 400 donors who quickly raised more than $23,000.
