Wednesday morning started out like any other day on the road for Charles Leroy Grandpre. The 64-year-old truck driver from Salina, Kansas, was rolling down Interstate 29 in Western Iowa, just as the early sun was breaking over Pottawattamie County. But in a split second around 6:24 a.m., an ordinary morning turned into an absolute nightmare.
Charles was behind the wheel of a 2024 Kenworth semi tractor-trailer heading northbound. He was a seasoned traveler on these long stretches of highway, built for long hauls and steady miles. Riding alongside him that morning was 49-year-old Angela Dawn Blackwood, who had come all the way from Broken Bow, Oklahoma.

As the massive rig approached the quiet Honey Creek exit, something went terribly wrong. For reasons state investigators are still trying to figure out, the heavy semi suddenly veered off the paved lane. There was no time to react as the truck drifted out of control toward the wide grass median.
The heavy rig sliced right through the steel cable barriers meant to catch runaway vehicles. With unstoppable momentum, the truck tore across the median dirt and slammed directly into a concrete support column holding up the Rosewood Road bridge. The violent impact echoed across the quiet rural corridor.
First responders rushed to the scene within minutes of the frantic emergency calls. Troopers from the Iowa State Patrol arrived alongside local rescue crews, but the damage to the cab was catastrophic. Both Charles and Angela had suffered fatal injuries, and emergency personnel pronounced them deceased right there at the crash site.
News of the fatal wreck traveled quickly back to Kansas, leaving the community of Salina in utter shock. Friends and neighbors remembered Charles as a hard-working man with a warm heart and a steady presence. The loss felt just as heavy in Oklahoma, where Angela’s friends struggled to accept the heartbreaking news of her sudden passing.
While state troopers continue to look into what caused the rig to leave the road, those who knew Charles aren’t focusing on the tragic end. They are choosing to remember his generosity, his easy smile, and the countless moments he shared with family. His memory, alongside Angela’s, will live on in the hearts of everyone who loved them
