There are moments that tear the heart right out of a small town, and Tuesday afternoon brought one of those moments that leaves everyone speechless. Eight-year-old Addy Maggard was just a little girl from Lesage, West Virginia, full of life and loved by everybody who knew her. She had her whole future stretched out ahead of her, the kind of kid whose smile could light up any room. But in a single split second along Interstate 75, that bright future came to a sudden and painful stop, leaving two communities clear across state lines wrapped in unimaginable grief.
It was right around two o’clock in the afternoon when the unthinkable happened down near mile marker 77. The highway was busy as usual, folks going about their daily routines, when two vehicles crashed into each other in a devastating wreck. Traffic ground to a complete halt as emergency lights began flashing down the interstate. Nobody on that road knew right away just how terrible the situation really was, but inside one of those vehicles, little Addy was fighting for her life.
Emergency crews from the Berea Police Department were the first to arrive at the scene, rushing to render aid to those involved in the impact. Recognizing the severity of the wreck, officers immediately called in backup from the Richmond Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit to help figure out what happened. First responders worked as fast as they could, trying desperately to save the young girl while securing the dangerous stretch of highway.
Addy was loaded into an ambulance and rushed directly to St. Joseph Hospital in Berea, where doctors and nurses did everything humanly possible to save her. But despite all their hard work and prayers, the injuries were just too severe. Deputy Coroner Carlos Coyle from the Madison County Coroner’s Office eventually had to make the tragic announcement that Addy had passed away.
The crash did not just take little Addy. Two other people involved in the two-car collision were also hurt and had to be rushed off to nearby hospitals for emergency medical care. As of right now, local officials have kept their medical conditions private, leaving friends and family waiting anxiously for any updates on how they are holding up.
Back home in Lesage, as well as down in Richmond and Berea, news of Addy’s passing spread fast, heavy with sorrow. Neighbors and folks in the community are doing what they can to support a family facing every parent’s worst nightmare. People remember Addy as a sweet, loving child who brought pure joy into every room she walked into, and her sudden loss has left a hole in many hearts that will not heal anytime soon.
As police officers continue piecing together the details of the crash, local authorities are asking everyone to give Addy’s family the space and privacy they need to grieve. There are no easy answers after something like this, only memories of a young life that ended way too soon.
