Summer afternoons in south Nashville usually bring the sounds of kids splashing around and families soaking up the warm weather. But on a Monday evening along Sadler Avenue, that familiar summer routine turned into an absolute nightmare for one local family. Two-year-old Viomara Laura Ortiz was getting ready for what was supposed to be a fun family swim. Instead, a few quiet moments out of sight led to a tragedy that left the whole neighborhood in shock.
Little Viomara was the kind of toddler who brightened up every room she walked into. Friends and family remembered her radiant smile, her sweet curiosity, and the endless energy she brought into her home. Like most kids her age, she was quick on her feet and always eager to explore her surroundings. Her family cherished every single moment with her, never imagining how fast everything could change.
Around 6:00 p.m. that Monday, her father was getting things ready so they could all head outside into the backyard pool. He stepped away into another room for just a brief moment to change into his swim gear. It was a completely routine task that any parent does every day. But in those few seconds while his back was turned, the active toddler wandered away out of the room on her own.
When her dad turned around and realized Viomara was no longer in the room, panic immediately set in. He started calling her name and searching through the house, hoping she was just playing hide-and-seek. Seconds felt like hours as he ran from room to room, checking every corner. When she was nowhere inside, he rushed out toward the backyard to check near the water.
That is where he found her. Viomara was lying submerged in the family pool, silent and still. Investigators later checked home video footage and realized the little girl had been underwater for roughly eight minutes before her dad spotted her. The devastating sight sent her father into a desperate scramble to save his daughter’s life.
He pulled Viomara from the water and immediately started CPR right there beside the pool. Refusing to wait for an ambulance to arrive, he loaded her up and drove straight to the nearest fire station down the road for emergency help. Firefighters took over resuscitation efforts before paramedics rushed her to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Medical teams worked tirelessly to save her, but her little body could not recover.
The loss of Viomara has left a deep scar on everyone who knew her and loved her. Neighbors and local residents have rallied around the Ortiz family, offering prayers and support during an unimaginable time. Though her life was far too brief, the pure joy and love she brought into the world will stick with her family forever.
