John E. Granger III, 50, from Robert refused to stop for deputies Monday morning. That choice led to a chase, a crash, a fight in the woods near Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish, and his death from a gunshot.
Livingston Parish deputies tried to pull him over around 6 a.m. in Albany tied to a criminal investigation. John kept going. The pursuit crossed into Tangipahoa Parish.
Near Interstate 55 his vehicle went off the road, down an embankment, and slammed into another truck. John jumped out and ran across the lanes into the trees.
A deputy caught up and tried to arrest him. They struggled. John took the deputy’s taser and fired it at the officer. The deputy pulled his gun and shot John.
Medics took John to the hospital. He died from the injuries. The deputy got minor hurts in the fight. The driver of the other truck was fine.
State police are still investigating every detail of the stop, the chase, and the shooting.
Officials say the case stays open while they sort out the facts.
