John E. Granger III of Robert died Monday after a deputy shot him near Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish. He was 50. Family and friends in the Robert community now face a hard loss.
Deputies from Livingston Parish tried to stop his vehicle early that morning around 6 a.m. in Albany. They wanted him for a criminal investigation. John did not pull over. The chase moved into Tangipahoa Parish.
His vehicle crashed near Interstate 55 after it left the road and hit another truck. John got out and ran into the woods. A deputy found him there and tried to take him into custody.
A fight broke out. John got hold of the deputy’s taser and used it on him. The deputy then fired his service weapon. The shot hit John.
John went to a hospital. He died from the wounds. The deputy had only minor injuries. The other driver in the crash walked away unhurt.
Louisiana State Police are looking into the whole thing. No final word yet on what comes next.
