The crash that took Alexander Schreifels started on I-64 westbound in Norfolk just after 6 in the morning. He was 40 and riding his Honda motorcycle roughly half a mile before the Granby Street exit when the first impact hit.

Police reports put a GMC Denali and a Nissan Rogue in that initial mix with the bike. Alexander got hurt bad enough that medics rushed him to the hospital. He died from those injuries later on.

A separate collision followed right away in the same stretch. A Toyota 4Runner rear-ended a Ford Explorer. The Explorer’s driver walked away with non-life-threatening injuries and still needed hospital care.

Virginia State Police have the whole scene under review. They have not closed the books on what led to either part of the wreck.

Folks who knew Alexander in Norfolk are left sorting through the shock. Friends and family point to the everyday connections and the space he filled in their routines.

Support has come in from neighbors and others who heard the news. They stick close while the people closest to him work through the sudden change.

The highway stretch near Granby Street stays part of the ongoing probe. Alexander Schreifels leaves behind the ties he built over 40 years.
