A group of family and friends gathered on the Buffalo River last Saturday for kayaking and swimming. Among them was 20-year-old Mekhius Williams of Columbia. The day turned when he moved to cross the river.
Strong moving water overtook him. Williams slipped under the surface and stayed gone.

Wayne County Sheriff’s Office units arrived near 3:30 p.m. Help came from the local Emergency Management Agency, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and the Lawrenceburg Fire Department Dive Team.
Searchers worked the river until they recovered Williams. The body came up after the teams pushed through the recovery.
Medical examiners in Wayne County ordered an autopsy. They want a clear answer on what caused the death.
Authorities rule out foul play for now. The probe continues as they wait on the final medical report.
What started as a simple day by the river ended with the loss of a young man who was just trying to cross with the people he knew.
