Kansas City police are searching for answers after a fatal shooting near Van Brunt Boulevard and Independence Avenue left a woman dead early Sunday morning. Detectives are following every lead, but no suspect information has been released to the public.
The shooting happened around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, in the parking lot of an O’Reilly Auto Parts store. A Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy in the area heard the shots as they happened. The deputy drove straight to the spot, arriving ahead of primary police units.
Officers arrived to find a woman lying unresponsive in the lot. Emergency medical crews attempted to save her, but she died at the scene. Friends and family on social media identified her as Kierra McGee, though police have not officially confirmed her identity.
Homicide detectives spent hours at the scene looking for clues. They canvassed the surrounding blocks, knocking on doors and speaking with anyone who might have heard or seen something unusual around 4 a.m.
Crime scene investigators gathered physical evidence from the parking lot. Detectives are reviewing footage from nearby security cameras to see if any video captured the shooter or a getaway vehicle leaving the area.
With no suspect in custody, neighborhood residents remain worried about safety. Law enforcement is asking anyone who saw suspicious activity near Independence Avenue and Van Brunt Boulevard to contact police immediately.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to solve the case. Police say they will continue following leads until they find out who was responsible for the shooting.
